Penile carcinoma

Penile carcinoma is a malignant disease of the penis. It usually only occurs from the age of 60. In around 95 percent of cases it involves a degeneration of the bulbous head (glans) of the penis, the foreskin of the penis, or the mucous membrane of the urethra (squamous cell carcinoma). Penis cancer accounts for about one percent of all malignant cancers – there are 0.4 new diseases per 100,000 people per year.

Penis cancer is histologically (i.e. the tissue type) a cornified, usually well differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. One of the causes has been identified as certain types of human papilloma viruses (HPV 16 and 18), and also benign inflammatory precursor lesions and Lichen sclerosis and Lichen planus can develop in a squamous cell carcinoma. Another etiological factor for the development of penile cancer is poor hygiene, as chronic inflammatory changes in the glans and foreskin of the penis can occur.

Redness, itching, nodules on the glans or at the transition to the penile shaft, are evidence of a pathological change of the penis. There can be bleeding on contact with the affected area and a swelling of the inguinal lymph nodes. Penile carcinomas are usually not painful. Difficulties with urinating, oedema of the entire penis, and hardening of the large lymph nodes can be felt which are also symptomatic of penis cancer.

A reliable diagnosis can only be done by taking a biopsy. It is always important to make a differential diagnostic in order to eliminate other possibilities such as Bowen’s disease, Erythroplasia or Queyrat etc. Because some symptoms are similar to other conditions, it is safest to take a tissue sample of the tumour and the swollen lymph nodes.

Recommended therapies for the treatment of penile carcinoma:

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)

At the Hyperthermia Center Hannover, we recommend photodynamic therapy (PDT) to our patients with penile carcinoma, in which targeted diseased cells are destroyed by light. In the process, a light-activatable substance (a so-called photosensitizer - here: Chlorin) is injected. This triggers a chemical reaction in combination with light of a specific wavelength in the diseased cells, which leads to cell death. The surrounding healthy tissue is spared.

Whole-body Hyperthermia

The healing effect of whole-body hyperthermia is that we can very quickly bring the body to high temperatures (up 40.5 °). This fast and high heating activates not only the immune system, but many degenerate cells are destroyed by the fast floods of heat. In addition to the damage or removal of  the degenerate cells of penile cancer, the whole-body hyperthermia activates the immune system enormous without burdening the rest of the body. It triggers an immune cascade that activates and multiplies the white blood cells.

Loco-regional Hyperthermia

Also the regional effective hyperthermia is advisable for the penile carcinoma: during this treatment the affected region is quickly heated to high temperatures (40 up to 44 ° C). This heating activates the immune system. Also, many cells of penis cancer will be harmed or destroyed. In our day clinic at the Hyperthermia Centre Hannover we offer also the partial body hyperthermia depending on the diagnosis, and only damaged or degenerated tissue is overheated, which guarantees very gentle treatment to our patients.

Infusions with high-dose Vitamin C

At the Hyperthermia Centre Hannover we treat patients with penile carcinoma successfully with high-doses of vitamin C. The so-called Ascorbic acid is the most popular vitamin,- and the most important antioxidant, i.e. it intercepts harmful free radicals in the body and makes them harmless – and in this way prevents degeneration in the cells. Vitamin C is also essential for the immune system and various restructuring processes in the body. When vitamin C is given in a high- dose, the treatment of penile carcinoma can be positively affected.


Ozone with its three oxygen atoms, has a germ-killing and disinfecting effect, along with a short-term increase in blood circulation, has been proven scientifically. The ozone treatment offered at the Hyperthermia Centre Hannover utilizes the acute oxygen problem of the cancer cells of penile carcinoma. Blood is taken from the patient’s vein. The blood is made incoagulable (unclottable) and mixed with an ozone-oxygen mixture. This enriched blood is then injected intravenously back into the patients again.


The nutritional therapy of Dr. Gerson aims at detoxifying the body with simultaneous addition of many fresh nutrients. We recommend this nutritional therapy to our patients with penile carcinoma. It includes high-quality fruits and vegetables in addition to special juices, fresh and elaborately prepared and taken throughout the day.
